Theme Statement

The 2025 Annual Conference of the Taiwanese Political Science Association (TPSA) is  now accepting abstract submissions. Themed “Political Changes in a Polarized World,” the conference is co-hosted by TPSA itself and the Department of Political Science at National Chengchi University.

With the second term of US President Donald Trump, domestic and foreign policies have had a profound impact not only on the US political landscape but also on global norms. Beyond the rise of populism and deepening polarisation, this conference will focus on their influence on global political norms and models. Additionally, the long-term effects of Trumpism, the transformations in US internal and external policies, and the democratic threats posed by extreme polarisation will be explored. The conference will address a variety of Trumpism influences, including the reshaping of party politics, civil and social participation, and voter behavior. Moreover, the interaction between these phenomena will be discussed. The conference will examine how the widespread influence of populism could threaten democratic stability and social trust, as well as how Trump’s diplomatic policies alter global institutions.

Another dimension to be inspected is the emerging challenges of international governance, particularly how state governments respond to the drastically shifting geopolitics under Trump’s unilateral diplomacy. In addition to the social structure of the US, the Trump administration catalyzed considerable global transformations, which will be thoroughly considered in our seminars.

The conference aims to provide attendees with an in-depth understanding of how Trump’s second term impacts global politics in various ways while offering substantial insights into Taiwan’s political developments. We sincerely welcome participants from all backgrounds to share experiences and insights and freely express their unique opinions. Through this, we hope to bridge academic research with real-world challenges and maximise their values.

The conference is open to a wide range of topics. While we primarily anticipate papers in political science, submissions from other fields are also encouraged.
